I made a quick trip up into the North Fork Nooksack River valley for the first time this winter. As I suspected lower elevation snow doesn't really exist. I know *I* had never heard of it before this past week. The park may not be that well known to people outside of the Anacortes area but it sure is a gem. For those of you not from the Pacific Northwest, a pineapple express storm is one that originates from the area around Hawaii (hence the pineapple reference) and brings alot of moisture and high snow levels. The only good fall color this year has been up high and and on the east side of the Cascades. I've wanted to check out the larch fall colors since my premature visit two years ago to Maple Pass. Of course, finishing winter with fresh powder and no lift lines is somewhat cruel but it's also a fine way to end a season. The month of May could shape up to be very busy for me since I have a number of photography ideas to pursue. The weather on this day was a bit weird- sunshine but with a constant thin, high layer of clouds. This particular road has been closed since the fall of 2006 when a major storm event re-routed a portion of the North Fork Skykomish River to flow down a half mile of the existing road.
